Description
The neurosciences intensive care unit (NICU) is one of 27 units in the UK providing specialised intensive care for patients who have severe illnesses or injury affecting their brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves.
The regional unit serves a population of approximately three million covering Hampshire, parts of West Sussex, Wiltshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight, as well as the Channel Island. Some patients are admitted from further afield for specialised care if it is unavailable in their area.
All patients are admitted under the care of a consultant neurosurgeon or a consultant neurologist. During a patient's stay in NICU a consultant intensivist will oversee their care on a day-to-day basis.
