Description

The Neurosurgery team diagnose and treat a number of types of condition.

Neuro-oncology covers the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumours. These can be primary tumours , secondary tumours or meningiomas . Procedures carried out include scans and biopsies for diagnosis, and craniotomies or drug treatment . If you have or are suspected of having a brain tumour, the Wessex neuro-oncology multi-disciplinary team will meet to discuss the best course of treatment for you.

Other conditions diagnosed and treated include:

´Head injury

´Neurovascular surgery

´Neuro-oncology (brain tumours)

´Skull base and pituitary surgery

´Epilepsy surgery

´Paediatric neurosurgery

´Functional neurosurgery (for conditions where the function of the brain or spinal cord is impaired even though there is nothing wrong with the structure)

Referral Criteria

The doctors looking after you may refer your case to the Wessex neuro-oncology multi-disciplinary team (MDT) for an opinion on the best way of investigating and treating your condition. Your local doctors may well have already discussed your case with a member of the neurosurgery team by telephone and will have probably already have started you on some medical treatment. You may have had a CT scan of the head and you will usually need an MRI scan of the brain and sometimes CT scans of the rest of your body. This is to allow us to make the best decision about your treatment. If you are well enough you will probably be discharged home and will be contacted with the outcome of the MDT meeting either by your local doctors or by the MDT. The next steps will then be explained
