Description
The Southampton surgical spinal service offers a comprehensive emergency and elective service for adult and paediatric (child) spinal conditions.
The service provides a 24/7 on-call emergency service for all urgent and emergency spinal conditions from the Wessex region and operates outpatient clinics at Poole, Basingstoke, Andover, Winchester and the Isle of Wight.
All surgery is undertaken within SUHT and covers procedures for spinal infection, spinal tumours and spinal trauma. Adult non-emergency patients are admitted to the Wessex Neurological Centre and are assessed before being admitted to a five-day ward. Length of stay varies depending upon the exact nature of the surgery but some procedures such as lumbar microdiscectomy and cervical discectomy are usually overnight stays.
